What This Means (2025 FDD)

According to The Standardx's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, the AOP Term, or Area of Protection Term, is the period during which a franchisee's rights to an Area of Protection apply. The FDD states that The Standardx will assign an AOP Term and list it in the Franchise Agreement before the agreement is signed.

The AOP Term for The Standardx typically lasts from 1 to 5 years after the Hotel's opening date. The term begins on the effective date of the Franchise Agreement. However, if the Hotel is an operating Brand Hotel, the franchisee may not receive any Area of Protection or AOP Term when signing the Franchise Agreement. The Standardx determines whether to provide any Area of Protection based on the time during which the Hotel has operated under the "Hyatt" or "The StandardX" name and the market conditions under which the Hotel operates.

After the AOP Term ends, the franchisee will not have any territorial rights or protection. The Standardx and its affiliates can then open and operate other Brand Hotels within the Area of Protection, even under franchise applications submitted or agreements signed during the AOP Term. This means that a The Standardx franchisee could face competition from other franchisees or company-owned outlets after the AOP Term expires. This is a fairly standard practice in the franchise industry, as franchise agreements typically have a defined term and renewal process.
