What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Sonesta Select Sonesta Essential's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, the franchise operates select service, upscale hotels under two brand concepts: Sonesta Select Hotels and Sonesta Essential Hotels. The specific brand concept under which a franchisee will operate their hotel is designated on Exhibit A of the Franchise Agreement. The agreement clarifies that references to "Brand Hotels" pertain to Sonesta Select-branded hotels if that is the designated concept, or to Sonesta Essential-branded hotels if that concept is chosen.
This distinction is important because the chosen brand concept dictates various aspects of the franchise agreement. These include the trademarks and service marks that the franchisee is authorized to use. If the Designated Brand Concept is Sonesta Select Hotels, the franchisee can use the Sonesta Select® Hotels marks. If the Designated Brand Concept is Sonesta Essential, the franchisee can use the Sonesta EssentialTM Hotels marks.
Prospective franchisees should pay close attention to Exhibit A of their Franchise Agreement to understand which brand concept they are being granted a franchise for. This will determine the specific brand standards, marketing materials, and overall positioning of their hotel within the Sonesta system. Understanding the Designated Brand Concept is crucial for adhering to the franchisor's requirements and effectively operating the hotel.
