What This Means (2025 FDD)

The 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document for Dollar Rent A Car does not explicitly state whether the company owns any patents. However, it does state that Dollar Rent A Car, Inc. has developed and owns a proprietary system for the business of renting vehicles. This system includes uniform methods of conducting operations, accounting for business finances, procuring customers, advertising and publicity, insurance programs, and the uniform style and character of equipment, furnishings, and appliances used in the conduct of such businesses. The system is identified by certain trademarks, service marks, trade names, logos, emblems and other commercial symbols, including the marks "Dollar" and "Dollar Rent A Car".

While the FDD mentions Dollar Rent A Car's ownership of trademarks and a proprietary system, it remains unclear whether this system is protected by any patents. Patents typically cover inventions and discoveries, while trademarks protect brand names and logos. The "proprietary system" could potentially involve patented technology, but the document does not confirm this.

Prospective franchisees should directly ask Dollar Rent A Car whether any aspects of their rental system or related technologies are protected by patents. Understanding the scope of the company's intellectual property, including any patents, could be important for assessing the competitive advantages and potential risks associated with the franchise.
