Answer from 2025 FDD Document

The Hertz Corporation was granted in 2015 the right to grant franchises under the Hertz trademark in Canada and to be the exclusive franchisor for Hertz franchises in that country. In addition, pursuant to certain inter-company license agreements, The Hertz Corporation was granted in 2017 the right to grant franchises under the Dollar and Thrifty trademarks in Canada. What This Means (2025 FDD)

According to the 2025 Dollar Rent A Car Franchise Disclosure Document, The Hertz Corporation grants all franchises in Canada under the Dollar Rent A Car trademark. This arrangement began in 2017 when The Hertz Corporation was granted the right to grant franchises under the Dollar trademark in Canada through inter-company licensing agreements.

Prior to this, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Canada Inc. (DTAGC), through its subsidiary DTG Canada Corp., managed the Dollar Rent A Car licenses in Canada after purchasing the master license rights in February 2003. However, all licenses under DTG Canada have since expired.

For a prospective franchisee, this means that if they are looking to open a Dollar Rent A Car franchise in Canada, they would need to work directly with The Hertz Corporation rather than Dollar Rent A Car, Inc. or its other affiliates. This is an important distinction to understand the structure of franchising rights and who the direct franchisor will be in that specific region.
