What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Buona's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, a franchisee must complete a full Franchised Business Renovation within the timeframe required by Buona. This renovation includes the building design, parking lot, landscaping, equipment, point of sale system, signs, interior and exterior decor items, fixtures, furnishings, trade dress, color scheme, presentation of trademarks and service marks, supplies, and other products and materials. The renovation must meet the then-current design criteria for Buona Businesses, including structural changes, remodeling, redecoration, and modifications to existing improvements.
Buona requires franchisees to maintain the premises of the Franchised Business and all fixtures, furnishings, signs, systems, and equipment in conformity with Buona's high standards and public image. Franchisees must make additions, alterations, improvements, repairs, and replacements as required by Buona. This includes keeping the Franchised Business in the highest degree of cleanliness, sanitation, and repair, meeting the highest governmental standards, and enabling the Franchised Business to offer new products or services or operate more efficiently.
Franchisees are typically only required to conduct a Franchised Business Renovation once during the term of their agreement, and they are not required to perform a renovation if there is less than one year remaining in the term. However, franchisees must still operate the Franchised Business in accordance with Buona's standards and specifications for the System throughout the term. Before starting construction, the franchisee must submit a site plan for approval. Buona will provide basic drawings and specifications, including requirements for dimensions, exterior design, materials, interior layout, equipment, fixtures, furniture, signs, and decorating. The franchisee must hire a licensed architect designated by Buona to modify these drawings and specifications to meet local ordinances and building codes, subject to Buona's approval.
After the premises are established and approved, no changes to the interior or exterior design, equipment, or fixtures are allowed without Buona's prior written consent. Franchisees are responsible for purchasing, installing, and constructing all improvements, furniture, fixtures, equipment, and signage specified in the approved standard plans and specifications. They must also purchase other furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and signage as Buona may direct from time to time in the manuals or in writing. Franchisees cannot install any improvements, furniture, fixtures, equipment, or signage without Buona's prior written consent.
