Is prior approval needed for Hydrodog advertising and promotional plans and materials prepared by the franchisor?
Hydrodog Franchise · 2025 FDDAnswer from 2025 FDD Document
All advertising and promotion by you and by any cooperative must be in the type of media and format that we approve, must be conducted in a dignified manner, and must conform to our standards and requirements. You or the cooperative must submit written samples of all proposed advertising and promotional plans and materials for our approval at least 30 days before their intended use, unless the plans and materials were prepared by us or have been approved by us within the last 12 months.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Hydrodog's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, franchisees do not need prior approval for advertising and promotional plans and materials prepared by Hydrodog, but they do need it for those prepared by a cooperative. The FDD states that franchisees or the cooperative must submit written samples of all proposed advertising and promotional plans and materials for Hydrodog's approval at least 30 days before their intended use, unless the plans and materials were prepared by Hydrodog or have been approved by them within the last 12 months.
This means that while Hydrodog franchisees have some autonomy in local advertising, Hydrodog retains control over brand messaging and standards. This is a fairly typical arrangement in franchising, allowing for some local customization while ensuring brand consistency. The 30-day review period allows Hydrodog to ensure that all advertising aligns with its overall marketing strategy and brand image.
Hydrodog also has the right to designate geographic areas for regional advertising and promotional cooperatives, in which all franchisees in the area must participate. These cooperatives are formed to administer regional advertising programs and develop standardized advertising materials, subject to Hydrodog's approval. Franchisees should be aware of these requirements and the potential impact on their local advertising efforts.
