Can a Golden Corral developer redefine or relocate their Development Area?
Golden_Corral Franchise · 2025 FDDAnswer from 2025 FDD Document
Developers are granted a geographic area ("Development Area") within which to develop Restaurants. We typically define Development Areas in terms of one or more Designated Market Areas (as defined by Nielsen Media Research) or portions of DMAs. Your Development Area will be defined in an exhibit to your Development Agreement, and may be further defined by sub-markets established by mutually approved segmentation map(s). You do not receive any right to redefine or relocate the Development Area.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Golden Corral's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, developers are not permitted to redefine or relocate their Development Area. The Development Area, which is a geographic area granted to the developer for establishing restaurants, is defined in an exhibit to the Development Agreement, typically based on Designated Market Areas.
While developers cannot redefine or relocate their Development Area, Golden Corral retains specific rights within that area. Golden Corral can conduct research and negotiations for potential sites, enter into contracts, and procure necessary permits. If Golden Corral secures a site that meets their standards, they will notify the developer, who then has a 14-day period to decide whether to accept an assignment of the site contracts, including reimbursing Golden Corral for site development costs. Failure to accept the assignment and pay the required fees within a specified timeframe can result in the termination of the Development Agreement.
Furthermore, territorial protection within a submarket ceases upon the execution of a Franchise Agreement for an approved site in that submarket. The developer's territorial protection is also contingent on meeting the Development Schedule outlined in the Development Agreement. Failure to adhere to the Development Schedule can lead to the termination of the agreement and loss of rights to develop additional Golden Corral restaurants within the Development Area. These stipulations highlight the importance of adhering to the Development Agreement and meeting the set requirements to maintain territorial rights.
