What This Means (2025 FDD)

According to the 2025 Dq Treat FDD, International Dairy Queen (IDQ) does not directly offer or issue franchises, nor does it operate any company-owned Dq Treat stores. Instead, IDQ's role involves the limited sale of products to franchise systems managed by its subsidiaries. These subsidiaries, such as American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ), are the entities that actually grant and manage Dq Treat franchises. Therefore, IDQ's obligations to Dq Treat franchisees are primarily tied to fulfilling product supply agreements, not the franchise agreement itself.

ADQ offers franchises for the development of Dq Treat stores, which are quick-service food establishments selling approved soft-serve, treat, beverage, and a limited number of food items. These franchises are available for both captive venue locations (such as malls and transportation terminals operating under the DQ/Orange Julius trade name) and street locations (freestanding or strip mall locations operating under the DQ/Dairy Queen trade name). As a Dq Treat franchisee, you gain access to nationally recognized trademarks, operational and management systems, participation in sales promotion programs, and various forms of training and operational assistance.

For a prospective Dq Treat franchisee, this distinction is important because it clarifies the roles of ADQ and its parent company, IDQ. While ADQ is the primary point of contact for franchise-related matters, IDQ's involvement is mainly in the background, ensuring the supply of products necessary for the operation of the franchise. Understanding this relationship helps franchisees appreciate the support structure and the different entities responsible for various aspects of the franchise system. Franchisees should direct specific inquiries about franchise terms, operational support, and compliance to ADQ, while recognizing IDQ's role in maintaining product standards and supply chain logistics.
