What This Means (2024 FDD)
According to Desi District's 2024 Franchise Disclosure Document, sales taxes collected by the franchisee are not included in the calculation of Gross Sales. Gross Sales is defined as the total dollar amount of all sales generated through the Business for a given period, including payments for services or products sold, whether for cash or credit.
However, the definition explicitly excludes certain items from Gross Sales. These exclusions include bona fide refunds to customers, sales taxes collected by the franchisee, sales of used equipment not in the ordinary course of business, and sales of prepaid cards or similar products (although the redemption of such cards or products will be included in Gross Sales).
This definition is important for Desi District franchisees because the royalty fee, as well as any market cooperative contributions, are calculated as a percentage of Gross Sales. By excluding sales taxes from the Gross Sales calculation, the franchisee does not pay a percentage of those taxes to Desi District as part of the royalty or marketing contributions.
