What This Means (2025 FDD)

Based on the 2025 City Publications Franchise Disclosure Document, the franchisee must provide written notice of their desire to renew the franchise agreement at least six months, but not more than twelve months, before the agreement's expiration. If the franchisee fails to substantially comply with the agreement during its term, City Publications may refuse to grant a successor franchise. However, if the noncompliance can be resolved, City Publications may consider granting a successor franchise. This suggests that timely notice is crucial, and failure to adhere to the agreement's terms can impact renewal eligibility.

This renewal process is typical in franchising, as it allows the franchisor to assess the franchisee's performance and compliance with the franchise agreement. The six to twelve-month window provides sufficient time for both parties to evaluate their options and negotiate terms for a potential renewal. The stipulation that City Publications may refuse renewal if the franchisee has not substantially complied with the agreement underscores the importance of adhering to the franchise terms throughout the agreement's duration.

For a prospective City Publications franchisee, this means maintaining a strong record of compliance with the franchise agreement is essential for securing a renewal. Franchisees should be proactive in addressing any potential issues of noncompliance and communicate openly with City Publications to resolve them. Understanding and adhering to the notice requirements for renewal is also critical to ensure the opportunity to continue operating the franchise beyond the initial term.
