Under what conditions might a Required Trainee be exempt from attending the Carvel Management Training Program?
Carvel Franchise · 2025 FDDAnswer from 2025 FDD Document
If any of your Required Trainees have previously attended and successfully completed our Management Training Program and you or they have not defaulted under any other franchise agreement with us, we may, in our sole discretion, determine that such Required Trainee is not required to attend the Management Training Program again or will be required to attend a limited version of the Management Training Program.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Carvel's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, a Required Trainee may be exempt from attending the Management Training Program if they have previously attended and successfully completed the program, and neither they nor the franchisee are in default under any other franchise agreement with Carvel. In such cases, Carvel retains the sole discretion to determine whether the trainee must attend the program again or if a limited version of the training will suffice.
This exemption offers a potential benefit to experienced franchisees or managers who have already undergone Carvel's training. It can save time and resources by avoiding redundant training. However, Carvel maintains the right to require the trainee to attend a limited or full version of the program, indicating that the decision is not automatic and depends on Carvel's assessment of the trainee's current knowledge and skills.
It is important to note that this exemption is not guaranteed. Carvel's discretion plays a significant role, and the franchisee should not assume that a previously trained individual will automatically be excused from the program. Franchisees should communicate with Carvel to confirm the training requirements for each Required Trainee to avoid potential issues or delays in the Shoppe's opening.
This policy is fairly common in franchising, as franchisors often recognize prior training while also ensuring that all personnel meet their current standards and practices. Carvel's approach balances the recognition of prior experience with the need to maintain consistent quality and operational standards across all franchise locations.
