What training programs must the Operating Principal successfully complete for Carls Jr.?

Franchisee, the General Manager, a minimum of 6 Shift Leaders and any other employees hired by Franchisee to fill certain designated positions shall attend and satisfactorily complete each element of the FMTP, specified by CJR. Franchisee's Operating Principal (as defined in Section 16.G.) also shall attend and satisfactorily complete each element of the FMTP if not previously completed. CJR reserves the right to modify or waive the training required based on an individual's or Franchisee's experience.
If Franchisee operates restaurants in multiple markets that are franchised by CJR or its affiliates, an individual meeting the qualifications of this Section will serve as the Operating Principal in at least one market.
- (3) The Multi-Unit Manager shall successfully complete the FMTP and any additional training required by CJR.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to the 2025 Carls Jr. Franchise Disclosure Document, the Operating Principal must attend and satisfactorily complete each element of the Franchise Management Training Program (FMTP) if they have not previously completed it. Carls Jr. reserves the right to modify or waive the training requirements based on the individual's or franchisee's experience.
The FMTP includes training at a Carls Jr. Restaurant designated by Carls Jr. and training on Star University (StarU), their online Learning Management System. In addition to the Operating Principal, the franchisee, the General Manager, a minimum of 6 Shift Leaders, and any other employees hired by the franchisee to fill certain designated positions must attend and satisfactorily complete each element of the FMTP, as specified by Carls Jr.
If a franchisee operates restaurants in multiple markets franchised by Carls Jr. or its affiliates, an individual meeting the qualifications of Section 16.G. will serve as the Operating Principal in at least one market. For all markets in which the Operating Principal fails to satisfy the requirements of Section 16.G., the franchisee must designate and retain a Multi-Unit Manager. The Multi-Unit Manager must successfully complete the FMTP and any additional training required by Carls Jr.
