What training programs must the Operating Principal of a Carls Jr. franchise successfully complete?

According to the 2025 Carls Jr. Franchise Disclosure Document, the Operating Principal must successfully complete the Franchise Management Training Program (FMTP) and any additional training required by Carls Jr. The FMTP includes training at a Carls Jr. Restaurant designated by CJR and training on Star University (StarU), their online Learning Management System. However, Carls Jr. reserves the right to modify or waive the training required based on an individual's or Franchisee's experience.

The Operating Principal plays a crucial role in overseeing the day-to-day activities of the franchised restaurant, including maintaining operational standards and financial performance. If the Operating Principal does not meet the requirements outlined by Carls Jr., the franchisee must designate a qualified replacement within 30 days. This ensures that a qualified individual is always in charge of restaurant operations.

In cases where a franchisee operates multiple Carls Jr. restaurants across different geographic markets, the Operating Principal must meet the specified qualifications in at least one of those markets. For markets where the Operating Principal does not meet these qualifications, the franchisee must appoint a Multi-Unit Manager who reports to the Operating Principal. The Multi-Unit Manager must also successfully complete the FMTP and any additional training required by Carls Jr.
