d costs for a single territory.

  • (2) Initial Franchise Fee. For start-up franchises, the above chart assumes you did not qualify for any discounts and paid the standard Initial Franchise Fee. The Initial Franchise Fee is due when you sign the Franchise Agreement and is generally non-refundable once paid. In limited circumstances, we may offer to finance up to 80% of your Initial Franchise Fee. See Item 10.
  • (3) Grand Opening Marketing Spend. You will be required to spend $50,000 on local advertising and marketing during the Stub Year and the first full calendar year of operations in accordance with an expenditure schedule we set for the first Territory, plus an additional $10,000 for each additional contiguous Territory ("Grand Opening Marketing Spend"). The amount that we require you to spend prior to opening or during the first three months of operations will depend on the time of year that you open. It could be as high as the entire Grand Opening Marketing Spend.

What This Means (2025 FDD)

According to Canopy Lawn Care's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, the initial franchise fee for a start-up franchise is $49,500. This fee is due upon signing the Franchise Agreement. The FDD specifies that this fee is generally non-refundable once paid. However, in some cases, Canopy Lawn Care may offer to finance up to 80% of the initial franchise fee, as detailed in Item 10.

This initial franchise fee grants you the right to operate a Canopy Lawn Care franchise. It is a one-time payment that essentially buys you into the franchise system, providing access to the brand, training, and support. It's important to note that while the FDD doesn't explicitly detail what the initial franchise fee covers beyond the right to operate, it is standard practice in franchising for this fee to contribute to the franchisor's costs of setting up the franchisee, including training, providing initial materials, and offering guidance.

Given that the initial franchise fee is generally non-refundable, prospective franchisees should carefully consider their decision before signing the Franchise Agreement. It would be prudent to clarify with Canopy Lawn Care the specific services and support included in the initial franchise fee to fully understand the value received for this upfront investment. Understanding the terms of Item 10 regarding potential financing options for the fee is also advisable.
