What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Burger King's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, as of December 31, 2024, there were 19,732 Burger King restaurants franchised or owned by Restaurant Brands International Limited Partnership. This total contributes to a larger portfolio of restaurants under Restaurant Brands International Inc., which includes Tim Hortons, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs.
For a prospective franchisee, this number indicates the established presence and scale of the Burger King brand within the Restaurant Brands International Limited Partnership. The document also specifies that approximately 95% of the systemwide restaurants are franchised, highlighting the company's reliance on the franchise model for expansion and operation.
The substantial number of Burger King restaurants suggests a mature franchise system with established processes and brand recognition. However, it also implies significant competition among franchisees. Potential franchisees should carefully evaluate market saturation and location availability in their target areas. They should also inquire about the level of support and resources Burger King provides to help franchisees compete effectively within the system.
It's important to note that Restaurant Brands International acquired Carrols Restaurant Group, Inc. in May 2024, which resulted in 1,023 franchised restaurants becoming company-owned. This acquisition demonstrates the company's strategic decisions regarding its mix of franchised versus company-owned locations, which can impact the overall franchise system and the opportunities available to new franchisees.
