What This Means (2025 FDD)

According to Burger King's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, franchisees must adhere to the brand's standards and specifications for nearly all goods and services used in the development, improvement, and operation of their restaurants. This broad requirement is in place to ensure quality, safety, and consistency across all Burger King locations, thereby protecting and enhancing the brand's image.

The specific items that must meet Burger King's standards include everything from the physical structure of the restaurant to the day-to-day supplies. This encompasses the construction and improvement of the restaurant itself, including fixtures, signage, and décor. It also extends to the food and beverages served, as well as related items like paper products, packaging, and cleaning supplies. Even promotional items and certain other supplies, products, services, and equipment, such as computer and point of sale hardware and software, digital menu boards, network services, and other technologies, are subject to these standards.

In practice, this means a Burger King franchisee has limited flexibility in sourcing these items. Franchisees are generally required to purchase these goods and services from Burger King's approved suppliers or distributors. This restriction ensures that all products used in the restaurant meet the franchisor's quality and safety requirements. While this may limit a franchisee's ability to negotiate lower prices or source local products, it also provides assurance that the items they are using are in compliance with Burger King's standards.

Burger King communicates these standards and operating specifications in their Manual of Operating Data. While specific standards are provided for items franchisees may purchase from any approved source, the detailed specifications for items that must be purchased from approved suppliers are kept confidential and are not provided to franchisees. This allows Burger King to maintain control over its supply chain and ensure consistent quality across all franchise locations.
