What is the 'System' that Brueggers Bagels franchisees must use?
Brueggers_Bagels Franchise · 2025 FDDAnswer from 2025 FDD Document
Bruegger's Bakeries operate according to a distinctive format, appearance, and set of specifications and operating procedures that we and our affiliates have developed and continue to develop (collectively, the "System"). Our mandatory and recommended standards, policies and procedures are represented in our confidential and proprietary training systems and materials (the "Manuals") which may be available in hard copy, electronic or web-based. We will give you access to the Manuals for the term of your franchise. We have the right to change the Manuals and the elements of the System at any time without consultation with you.
The bagels and baked goods that you will serve in the Bakeries are made from dough produced according to the proprietary recipe and manufacturing process owned by BEI. The dough products are central to the Bruegger's concept. In order to protect the distinctive and proprietary nature of these items, you must purchase the dough from the Bruegger's approved vendor. Please see Item 8 for additional information.
You will sell food and beverage items at retail to the public for carry out and consumption on the premises of the Bakery. In addition, we may permit you to establish a catering and take-out program ("Off-Premises Programs"), or we may establish a mandatory Off-Premises Program. You must pay any fees and costs associated with participating in Off-Premises Programs and comply with all other rules and procedures that we specify for each program.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to the 2025 Brueggers Bagels Franchise Disclosure Document, the 'System' is defined as the distinctive format, appearance, specifications, and operating procedures developed by Brueggers Bagels and its affiliates. This system governs how Brueggers Bagels bakeries operate. The standards, policies, and procedures are detailed in confidential training systems and materials called the 'Manuals,' which may be available in hard copy, electronic, or web-based formats. Franchisees gain access to these Manuals for the duration of their franchise agreement. Brueggers Bagels retains the right to modify the Manuals and the System elements at any time without consulting franchisees.
Critical components of the Brueggers Bagels system include the proprietary dough recipe and manufacturing process owned by BEI. Franchisees are required to purchase dough from Brueggers Bagels' approved vendor to maintain the consistency and quality of the bagels and baked goods. This requirement ensures that the core products remain distinctive and proprietary to the Brueggers Bagels brand. Franchisees are expected to sell food and beverage items at retail to the public, both for consumption on the premises and for carry-out.
Brueggers Bagels may also permit or require franchisees to participate in catering and take-out programs, referred to as 'Off-Premises Programs.' Franchisees are responsible for any fees and costs associated with these programs and must adhere to all specified rules and procedures. This allows Brueggers Bagels to maintain control over the brand's representation and service standards, even outside the traditional bakery setting.
In summary, the Brueggers Bagels 'System' encompasses all aspects of operating a Brueggers Bagels bakery, from product sourcing and preparation to customer service and marketing. Franchisees must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Manuals, which Brueggers Bagels can modify at its discretion. This comprehensive system aims to ensure brand consistency and quality across all franchise locations.
