What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Bft's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, Bft is not obligated to ensure that fund expenditures are equivalent or proportionate to a franchisee's contribution, nor is it obligated to ensure that any particular Bft studio benefits directly or pro rata from advertising or promotion conducted with fund contributions. This means that while franchisees contribute to the fund, there is no guarantee that the money will be spent in a way that directly benefits their specific location or in proportion to their contribution. The fund is intended to maximize general public recognition and acceptance of the Bft system and marks for the benefit of the system as a whole.
This arrangement is common in franchising, where advertising funds are often used for broad marketing campaigns that benefit the brand as a whole, rather than individual locations. While a franchisee in a particular market may contribute to the fund, the franchisor has discretion over how those funds are spent, which may include national advertising campaigns, sponsorships, or other marketing initiatives that may not directly impact every franchisee equally.
For a prospective Bft franchisee, this means understanding that the mandatory fund contributions are not a direct investment in their specific studio's marketing but rather a contribution to the overall brand promotion. Franchisees should inquire about the fund's historical expenditures, the types of marketing activities it supports, and the process by which the franchisor makes decisions about fund allocation to better understand how their contributions will be used to support the Bft brand.
