What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Ben Jerrys's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, the operator is required to use the training system designed by Ben Jerrys for training their employees. This ensures that all employees are trained to meet Ben Jerrys's standards for product quality, customer service, and brand representation.
Prior to opening a Ben Jerrys Scoop Shop, the operator, or if the operator is not an individual, an approved owner, or the operator's manager, must attend and complete Scoop U Training to Ben Jerrys's satisfaction. Ben Jerrys may also require any subsequently employed managers to attend and complete Scoop U Training for managers, and may charge a fee for this training. The operator, their manager, and other employees may also be required to attend additional courses, seminars, and other training programs as Ben Jerrys may require from time to time. Every five years, the operator must attend additional training programs, regardless of the number of shops they operate.
All training programs will be held at times designated by Ben Jerrys, typically in Vermont or other locations they specify. The operator may need to pay fees to Ben Jerrys or designated trainers for these courses, seminars, and programs after the initial pre-opening training. The operator or their employees are responsible for all expenses related to Scoop U Training and other training, including transportation, lodging, meals, and wages. Trainees will not receive compensation from Ben Jerrys for work performed during training. Ben Jerrys states that Scoop U Training is designed to protect the Ben & Jerry's brand and reputation, and is not designed to control the day-to-day operation of the Scoop Shop.
