If you sign an Area Development Agreement, you must commit to opening more than one Basecamp Studio, and you will pay the Development Fee at the time you sign the Area Development Agreement.
The Development Fee will be credited to the Initial Franchise Fee due under each Franchise Agreement you or your affiliate signs for each Basecamp Studio developed under the Area Development Agreement.

What This Means (2025 FDD)
According to Basecamp Fitness's 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document, when a franchisee signs an Area Development Agreement, they commit to opening more than one Basecamp Studio. At the time of signing the Area Development Agreement, the franchisee is required to pay a Development Fee. The amount of this fee varies depending on the number of studios the franchisee agrees to develop. Basecamp Fitness offers Area Development Agreements for 3, 5, or more than 5 studios.
The Development Fee is credited towards the Initial Franchise Fee that is due under each individual Franchise Agreement signed for each Basecamp Studio developed under the Area Development Agreement. This means that the Development Fee essentially acts as a pre-payment for the Initial Franchise Fees of the studios the franchisee commits to opening.
In practical terms, this structure benefits both Basecamp Fitness and the franchisee. Basecamp Fitness secures a commitment for multiple locations and receives upfront capital. The franchisee benefits by spreading out the initial investment over time, as the Development Fee offsets the Initial Franchise Fees for each subsequent studio opened within the agreed-upon development area. Note that if you sign an Area Development Agreement, you must also sign the standard Franchise Agreement for your first studio.
